What a long day today has been! A beach cleanup, pollada lunch (explained below) and a special chat too.
First, we got an early start so that we could head over to the beach for our morning cleanup with our San Bartolo friends. After assembling and making sure everyone had enough bags, we broke up into small groups to begin collecting trash from around Playa Sur (the South Beach); tires, pants, plastic bags and two-liter soda bottles were among some of our most frequently collected items.
With a morning of solid effort, Playa Sur looked considerably cleaner (at least our bags were all full!). After celebrating our accomplishment and tossing our last bags into the trash cans, we said our goodbyes for the day and headed back home to hit the showers.
Clean and ready to go, we then headed out to Geraldine's house, where her family was hosting a pollada, a special barbeque chicken potluck, to raise money for a family member who had fallen ill. Our eyes lit up as Carina and Noelia handed us our plates- the pieces of chicken were huge! Despite the slightly intemidating size, the chicken was no match for our appetites. After an early morning and beach cleanup, the delicious chicken was devoured in no time.
Winding down from a long week, most of us used this afternoon for some R&R- quality homework, napping, computer or reading time.
Stay tuned for more- apparently a special chat awaits us!
Love,
Celia
